Clean-up forced on homes in city's north

A report from the Public and Environmental Health Council says laws to address domestic hoarding and squalor need to be changed to tackle the issue.

According to the report, one householder was ordered to "clean and disinfect specified surfaces throughout the premises, remove all visible faeces, dispose of spoiled and compromised foods, remove soiled cat litter from the yard and implement rat, mouse and cockroach control measures".

City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said the council was at the "coal face" of the problem in the community and state laws and resources were needed to keep pace with the problem.

"The causes of squalor and hoarding are complex and many," he said. "Council has concerns with how squalor is dealt with by state legislation and government-run agencies due to the lack of a co-ordinated approach by all agencies in the prevention and recurrence of insanitary conditions."..." More
