May 9, 2012: Details Emerge On Central Bakersfield Animal Cruelty Case

Animal Control went to Rene Potter's central Bakersfield home Monday after receiving a complaint of unsanitary animal conditions.
Officers were denied access and came back Tuesday with a warrant and discovered 67 animals in deplorable conditions.
Potter was arrested.
"A lot of them were sick, had severe upper respiratory infections. Some were severely emaciated, very dehydrated. Some had skin issues," said County Animal Control supervisor Nick Cullen.
All the animals, including dogs, cats, a rat and snake were seized and are being treated at the County Animal shelter.
Some of Potter's neighbors said they did not even know she had pets because it was so quiet at the home.
"It was surprising seeing Animal Control over there. I couldn't believe they had as many as they did because you'd never see any. You wouldn't think there were any animals over there," said neighbor Clarence Stephens.
Code compliance has tagged the home as uninhabitable.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A woman was arrested Tuesday afternoon after officers said they found several sick animals in her home.
Animal Control officers said they received a complaint regarding a home in the 1100 block of Dixon Avenue.
When officers arrived and attempted to investigate, they were denied access by homeowner, officers said.
Officers said they returned later with a search warrant to enter the premises and check the welfare of the animals.
Upon entering the premises, officers said they found a number of animals including dogs, puppies, cats, kittens and a rat and snake to be underweight, injured and ill.
